Roof Painting

Roof painting, sometimes called roof restoration, is a different job to walls and trim. It starts with a proper water blast to strip off lichen, moss, and chalking paint, followed by rust treatment on any exposed metal fastenings or corroded sections before a primer and topcoat go on. Skip the water blast or the rust treatment and the new coating peels within a season or two, no matter how good the paint itself is.

Most New Zealand roofs are long-run steel, often sold under the Colorsteel brand, along with concrete tile and clay tile roofs on older homes. Each substrate takes a different coating system: steel roofs generally need a rust-inhibiting primer before a specialist roof membrane paint, while concrete tile often needs a sealer first to stop the paint soaking straight into a porous surface. A roof painter who knows the difference will scope the job to your actual roof, not a generic square-metre rate.

Height and pitch drive both safety and price. Anything with a steep pitch, or height above about three metres, generally needs proper edge protection or scaffolding under New Zealand's health and safety rules, rather than someone balancing on a ladder against the gutter.
