Island Bay sits on Wellington's exposed south coast, where wind and salt spray off Cook Strait are a daily reality rather than an occasional factor, and any exterior coating here needs to be chosen with that exposure in mind rather than a standard inland system. The suburb's older weatherboard cottages, many close to the waterfront, tend to show weathering sooner than an equivalent home further up the valley.
