Two sides of the same service

How painting and decorating enquiries work in practice, from the customer's side and from a provider buying leads through the network.

Prep, not paint

The situation

The south elevation was flaking and the household had three quotes that varied by thousands with no visible explanation. The cheap quote and the expensive quote described the same finished result, which made the decision impossible.

What happened

The enquiry captured substrate, rough square metres, surface condition and whether scaffolding was needed, so the painter could quote prep and coating as separate lines rather than one number. That made the difference between the quotes legible: the cheap one had assumed a wash and a coat.

Why it mattered

Two full days went on prep before any paint. That is the part households do not see and do not want to pay for, and it is also the part that decides whether the job lasts five years or fifteen. Itemising it is what let the customer choose knowingly.

Interior enquiries through the same channel

The situation

Exterior painting in New Zealand has weather windows. From roughly May the work thins out, and a sole operator either carries the quiet months or takes whatever interior work turns up through word of mouth, which is unpredictable.

What happened

Interior and exterior enquiries arrive through the same channel, tagged by service, so winter interior work can be actively taken rather than waited for. The enquiry carries room counts and surface condition, so it can be quoted without a site visit in most cases.

Why it mattered

A flatter year. The value was not a higher total, it was fewer weeks with nothing booked, which for a sole operator is the difference between a good year and an anxious one.
