Painting quotes vary more than most people expect, and almost never because of the paint. These are the five things worth understanding before you compare quotes.
Preparation, not paint
Most people assume the paint is the cost. It is the prep. Washing, scraping, sanding, filling, priming and any rot repair is where the hours go, and it is why two quotes on the same house can differ by thousands. A quote that looks cheap is usually cheap on prep.
What the cladding is made of
Weatherboard, plaster, brick and concrete all take different primers and different amounts of labour. Masonry needs a specialist primer and generally runs above a comparable weatherboard job.
How high the work is
Everything above ladder height slows down. A two storey house is not twice the paint, but it is more time, and it often means scaffolding, which is hired separately and quoted as its own line.
How many coats the surface needs
Bare timber, a strong colour change or a previously unpainted surface can need an extra coat. Ask any quote to state the number of coats and the product, because that is the detail that makes two prices comparable.
The weather window
Exterior work in New Zealand is seasonal. Painters book out over summer and quotes tighten. Work planned for the shoulder season is often easier to schedule and easier to negotiate.
